Outpatient Surgery

The following describes outpatient surgery at Hurley Medical Center. For specific information regarding your health and treatment options, please contact your Hurley physician or medical professional.

Outpatient surgery, also called same day surgery or ambulatory surgery, is performed at Hurley Medical Center for a wide range of routine or minor conditions that do not require an overnight stay in the hospital. Some patients may be admitted to the hospital after certain types of outpatient surgery such as bariatric surgery, joint replacement, or other elective surgery.

Patient- and Family-Centered Care is a very important part of Hurley’s outpatient surgery unit. A patient’s family is encouraged to sit with the patient right up until anesthesia, as well as after surgery during recovery. Parents are required to be with a pediatric patient before and after surgery.

For our pediatric patients, Hurley Child Life Services is especially helpful. Before their surgery, Child Life specialists take children on a tour of the Outpatient Surgery Department and explain to them what to expect. To lessen any fear and anxiety children might be feeling, these caring staff bring toys, games and coloring books for them to play with before and after their surgery. This keeps their minds occupied and makes their surgery experience as pleasant as possible.
