Minimally Invasive Surgery

Highly advanced procedures for less pain, faster healing and better outcomes

Less than 20 years ago, minimally invasive surgery (MIS) was introduced into widespread use in surgery. Today, MIS has become the standard of care for many procedures and has become widely accepted in nearly all specialties, often replacing traditional open surgery.

The surgeons at Hurley Medical Center are dedicated to bringing the latest in surgical advances to our patients. That's why we created the Minimally Invasive Surgery Center. Click here for a list of some of the minimally invasive surgical procedures we offer.

What is minimally invasive surgery (MIS)?

MIS is generally classified as any technique involved in surgery that does not require a large incision. These surgeries can involve laparoscopy, endoscopy, thoracoscopy or gastroscopy, where the surgeon operates through natural body openings or small incisions. These incisions are normally about 1/4 inch in length and require only a stitch or two to close. The tools, which are sometimes smaller than the nib of a fountain pen, utilize miniature cameras with microscopes, tiny fiberoptic flashlights, and high-definition monitors.

What are the benefits of MIS?

For patients, MIS can minimize pain and eliminate potential complications.  There is less stress on the body, less injury to tissue, and reduced blood loss — all of which lead to faster recovery time, shorter hospital stays, a quicker return to activities, and a decreased need for post-surgical pain medications. There are also significant cost savings as a result of shorter length of stay.

However, MIS should not be confused with minor surgery. Just as with traditional open surgery, selecting a surgeon and surgery center for a minimally invasive procedure is an important decision. At Hurley, with our certification as a Level 1 Trauma Center, you can rest assured that we on staff the best surgeons available, all of whom are adept at handling even most complex conditions and severely injured patients.
