Artificial Disc Replacement
What is artificial disc replacement?
In artificial disc replacement, a damaged disc in the neck or lower back is removed and an artificial one is inserted. One advantage of this procedure is that it can be performed again in the future, if necessary.
When is artificial disc replacement performed?
In some patients, disc replacement surgery may offer an alternative to spinal fusion surgery as a response to degenerative disc disease or other disc problems. As compared to spinal fusion, artificial disc replacement can often allow a greater degree of movement following recovery.
Artificial disc replacement is not recommended for every patient; patients with osteoporosis, infections or inflammation, or who have an allergic reaction to stainless steel should avoid this procedure.
