In fact, the bulk of Genesee County’s HIV/AIDS care is provided by Hurley’s outpatient Medical Specialty Clinic in the Hurley Medical Arts Building, next door to the hospital. Patients with Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are also treated in this clinic. Infectious Disease physicians oversee infection control issues affecting hospitalized patients and employees.
An Infectious Diseases physician is consulted when a patient has:
- a suspected or established infection
- an abnormal lab report (such as elevated white count)
- fever
- a positive culture (wound, blood, urine, sputum and other body fluids)
What causes an infectious disease?
Infectious diseases are caused by microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. You can acquire an infectious disease from another person, from an animal or insect bite, by eating or drinking contaminated food or water, or from other environmental exposures. Symptoms often include fever and chills. Some life-threatening infectious diseases may require hospitalization and intravenous antibiotics.
Many infectious diseases, such as measles, polio, and chickenpox, can be prevented by vaccines.
