Specialized nursing for hospitalized older adults: Nurses Improving Care for the Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) Program
Older adults hospitalized at Hurley Medical Center receive specialized care through our NICHE Program, which tailors health care around the unique needs of individual patients and their families.
Since 2008, Hurley Medical Center has been proud to be designated a NICHE hospital – the only national designation indicating a hospital’s commitment to elder care excellence. Made up of nearly 300 hospitals throughout North America, NICHE helps hospitals create an environment where geriatric patients (anyone 65 & older) are cared for in ways that bring about better outcomes while also meeting older patients’ unique needs.
NICHE Geriatric Resource Nurses visit elder patients, assess their needs, and explain the NICHE program to them. They then meet with a multidisciplinary team to determine the best and most appropriate care plan for these patients. NICHE evidence-based protocols focus on fall prevention, reduction in the use of restraints, pain management, appropriate use of medication, wound care, dementia care and addressing patient and family concerns.
For Health Professionals: Hurley's Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program
The Geriatric Fellowship Program at Hurley Medical Center is a fully developed clinical and educational curriculum that provides a well-supervised, hands-on educational experience in the management of elderly patients with a wide variety of medical issues and preventive health needs. Affiliated with the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, the Geriatric Fellowship Program enables fellows to further develop their skills as practicing physicians while obtaining additional qualifications in the field of geriatrics. As a sign of our program's ongoing excellence, 100% of Hurley’s geriatric fellows have passed the board certification exam in geriatric medicine upon completion of the fellowship.
The Brain Function Assessment Center
Initiated by a Hurley neuropsychologist, Hurley Medical Center Memory Clinics are now widely used by primary care physicians throughout the region, operating out of The Brain Function Assessment Center on Robert T. Longway Blvd. in Flint. Staffed with psychologists, The Brain Function Assessment Center offers a variety of services, including neuropsychological assessment, treatment, family counseling, behavioral management, psychotherapy and cognitive rehabilitation.
Often, families of older adults with dementia seek assessment of their loved one. Additionally attorneys and judges request capacity evaluations to determine the need for guardianship and conservatorship. Following an evaluation, the clinical team typically meets with the patient and family to review the report, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations.
