Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
The highest level of medical treatment and 24-hour monitoring for the most severely ill or injured patients
The critical care physicians and trauma surgeons, highly trained nursing staff, and cutting-edge technology of Hurley Medical Center's Intensive Care Unit enable us to provide this extremely high level of care and supervision for individuals suffering life-threatening conditions.
A team of specialists from throughout the hospital
Depending upon the unique medical needs and circumstances of each patient, we draw on resources from throughout Hurley Medical Center, including physician specialists, respiratory therapists, rehabilitation therapists and other medical professionals. Each patient’s medical team is headed by an experienced physician specializing in that particular area of medicine, and is supported by skilled nurses experienced in the treatment of critically ill patients.
The Intensive Care Unit provides patient- and family-centered care for a diverse population of patients with acute and chronic conditions. Because many of our patients experience problems with breathing, our pulmonologists also work closely with nursing staff to ensure that assistive breathing devices can provide a steady flow of oxygen during a patient’s treatment and recovery.
Pastoral counselors and other professional help in times of stress
For critically ill patients, their families are often an important source of support. However, the experience of having a loved in the ICU can be very difficult. The ICU is a very complex environment, the patient is often attached to a variety of medical devices and monitors, and there is often a high level of activity. If a patient’s prognosis is uncertain, or difficult treatment decisions must be made, the emotional stress on families can be even greater. If you need additional support, Hurley Medical Center offers pastoral counselors 24 hours a day, as well as licensed psychologists and medical social workers who can help address your concerns.
