Behavioral Medicine: Geriatric Treatment
The following describes various mental health treatments. For specific information regarding your health and treatment options, please contact your Hurley physician or medical professional.
Inpatient mental health services and treatments
Hurley Medical Center’s adult inpatient units, both adult and geriatric, are located on the C and D wings of the 2nd floor of the West Tower of the hospital. The 2C unit primarily houses older adults who frequently have a co-morbid medical disorder. Patients have either a formal voluntary or formal involuntary court-ordered admission status. At Hurley, our major focus of treatment is crisis stabilization with the goal of discharging the patient to a less restrictive setting where he/she can continue therapy.
An entire team of dedicated specialists is here to help you
Inpatient mental health services and treatment are provided by members of a interdisciplinary team of Hurley specialists, including a psychiatrist, RNs, mental health technicians, recreational and occupational therapists, a nurse, and a social worker case manager. The team members complete an admission assessment and develop a master treatment plan based on the patient’s identified problems and needs. Nurses conduct educational groups with emphasis on disease pathology, understanding mental health, problem solving, developing positive coping skills, basic health issues, sex education, pregnancy prevention and medication teaching. Our social worker conducts daily group therapy, family meetings, and helps with discharge planning and after-care treatment. We offer educational/ recreational groups conducted by recreational and occupational therapists, including leisure activities, social skills development, and the routines of daily living.
Outpatient mental health services and treatments
For outpatient mental health services, patients can receive individual, couples, family, or group therapy at Hurley Mental Health Associates, located in a separate facility from the hospital on South Linden Road. For the best possible outcome, we encourage family participation in all aspects of treatment. In addition, our specialists have experience in assessing for dementia.
