Level 1 Trauma Center
Hurley's Level 1 Trauma Center: Your first choice when seconds count.
The Hurley Level 1 Trauma Center, part of the new Paul F. Reinhart Emergency Trauma Center, provides immediate response by a highly specialized, in-house team of trauma professionals 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Combining the latest healthcare technology with our exceptional physicians and staff, our Level 1 Trauma Center–the only one in the region–delivers the highest level of medical care to trauma patients throughout Michigan, including both adults and children. Level 1 verification is the highest credential possible from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) for any trauma center.
The New State-of-the-Art Paul F. Reinhart Emergency Trauma Center
Opened in March 2012, the Paul F. Reinhart Emergency Trauma Center provides the highest quality of adult and pediatric emergency and trauma care available anywhere, furthering establishing Hurley Medical Center as a world-class teaching hospital and research center of excellence. A multi-dimensional emergency facility, the Paul F. Reinhart Emergency Trauma Center houses Hurley's Emergency Department, Children's Emergency Department and Level 1 Trauma Center.
The new Emergency Department and Trauma Center is named after the late Paul F. Reinhart, a former Michigan Department of Community Health official who was dedicated to ensuring adequate and fair distribution of Medicaid and Medicare funding for hospitals throughout the entire state of Michigan.
What is a Trauma Center?
A trauma center provides a well-organized, rapid response by health care professionals to anyone who has been critically injured. An effective trauma response requires immediate action by a highly skilled, integrated team led by a general surgeon with special training in trauma. The trauma surgeon determines and organizes the appropriate treatment for the injured person.
Trauma is a time-sensitive condition, and the Hurley Level 1 Trauma Center has the speed, efficiency and experience to deal with the most intense demands of a critically injured patient. In most cases, trauma patients are in the operating room within 30 minutes of their arrival at Hurley's Level 1 Trauma Center.
Michigan's northernmost Level 1 Trauma Center
As the area’s only Level 1 trauma center and Michigan’s northernmost facility, our Level 1 Trauma Center treats over 1,600 patients from across the state every year. We are unique in our ability to provide comprehensive care to adults and children, from our initial response all the way to inpatient treatment in Hurley Medical Center’s 415-bed hospital, followed by outpatient and follow-up services.
Our regional Burn Unit is unique among trauma facilities, enabling us to provide full-spectrum medical services to burn patients, from initial admission through inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient treatment.
Region's only Level II Pediatric Trauma Center
Hurley Children's Hospital stands alone as a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center, the highest designation available as determined by the Verification Review Committee (VRC), an ad hoc committee of the Committee on Trauma (COT) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Hurley is the only medical center to receive this verification in the region comprised of Genesee, Lapeer and Shiawassee counties, allowing us to treat the most serious injuries with the highest standards of technology and treatment.
Hurley Medical Center's pediatric emergency services area enables us to provide child-focused care in a separate area from adult populations, as well as the region's only Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
Trauma care that respects the wishes and decisions of patients and their families
We follow a patient- and family-centered care model, designed to help empower patients and their families in determining the course of treatment and care. Hurley’s Level 1 Trauma Center administers comprehensive quality assurance programs to make sure our trauma care is consistently at the highest level, and it has been chosen to participate in the Michigan Trauma Quality Improvement Program, sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Participation in this program enables us to develop and share best practices with other trauma centers and to offer additional, externally-verified quality assurance measures.
