Smoking Cessation
Smoking is a very serious health risk
Smoking is one of the worst habits you can have. Smoking is a major contributor to the leading causes of death, including stroke, heart disease, and cancer. Smoking has been proven to cause serious damage to:
- brain
- lungs
- blood
- arteries
- joints
- pancreas
- liver
- kidneys
- teeth and gums
- immune system
- cellular DNA
Lung cancer
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, among both men and women. People who smoke have the greatest risk of lung cancer, and your risk of lung cancer increases with the length of time and number of cigarettes you've smoked. If you quit smoking, even after smoking for many years, you can significantly reduce your chances of developing lung cancer.
The deadly facts about smoking
- In Michigan alone, 14,500 people die every year from smoking
- 1600 die every year from secondhand smoke in Michigan
- 65,000 kids in Michigan will try cigarettes this year
- 298,000 of these will eventually die from smoking if today’s trends continue
- Light cigarettes put smokers at the same risk for smoking-related health problems as regular cigarettes.
