Pediatric Diabetes Education Program
What help can I get for my child with diabetes?
Hurley's Pediatric Diabetes Education Program, the only diabetes pediatric education and management program of its kind in Genesee County, helps children with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and pre-diabetes. Our staff members work with children and their parents to help them cope with diabetes and stay healthy as they grow. They also visit schools to teach students and school staff about diabetes. In our Pediatric Diabetes Education Program, we work with you and your child so your child can manage diabetes himself/herself.
We teach your child:
- What diabetes is
- What puts you at risk for getting diabetes
- Blood sugar monitoring
- Diabetes medicines, including insulin pump
- How to stay healthy with diabetes
- What to eat
Help with a doctor or insurance
Your child’s doctor needs to order diabetes education. If your child doesn’t have a doctor, we can help you find one. Many insurance companies will cover diabetes education. If you do not have insurance, or if your insurance will not cover diabetes education, Hurley Medical Center will help you get the care and education you need.
