Breakthrough Angioplasty for MS Patients with CCSVI
P.C. Shetty, MD, a Hurley Medical Center interventional radiologist, has pioneered the use of angioplasty to help MS patients in the United States. Between 250,000 and 500,000 Americans are diagnosed as having multiple sclerosis (MS) each year. It is believed that a number of these patients may suffer from a condition known as chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI), which is characterized by narrowed veins that restrict blood flow to the brain and spinal cord. In March 2011, Dr. Shetty performed the first angioplasty for CCSVI at Hurley Medical Center on a patient from Canada. The patient has experienced significant relief from symptoms and has already referred other patients to Hurley from Canada.
Says Dr. Shetty, “MS is a devastating disease, and I am so pleased Hurley Medical Center is leading the way by offering this life-changing procedure. There has been tremendous research done nationally and internationally indicating that, by opening up these veins, many patients have an improvement of symptoms, and in some cases, a slower progression of this debilitating illness.” Dr. Shetty adds, “Though much more research and trials are needed to establish the efficacy of this procedure, initial results are promising.”
